Skip the 10-step shelf and the jaw exercises. Here's what genuinely changes how your skin looks — sorted by how strong the evidence is.

The glow-up, but peer-reviewed

"Looksmaxxing" is one of the biggest health search categories going — and one of the worst served. It's full of jaw trainers, tanning injections and face-rating apps. So here's the honest version. The things that genuinely change how your skin looks are unglamorous, cheap, and backed by actual trials. We rate the evidence, never a person.

The order below is deliberate: it's roughly the order of how much each thing is supported by evidence, not how much it's marketed.

1. Sun protection — the one with trial evidence

Well-supported· human data This is the single highest-leverage thing on the list, and it's not close. In a randomised trial, adults using sunscreen daily showed about 24% less skin ageing over four and a half years than those using it as they pleased, and regular use has trial evidence for reducing melanoma too. No serum has anything like this behind it.

2. A retinoid, if you want to target ageing

Well-supported· human data After sun protection, topical retinoids (tretinoin, retinol) have the best evidence for improving the look of photo-ageing — fine lines, texture, pigmentation — by prompting collagen production. 3. A short, consistent routine

4. Sleep

Preliminary· human data Skin does much of its repair overnight, and poor sleep is linked in small studies to slower barrier recovery and more visible ageing. It's a genuinely promising, free lever — worth as much attention as your skincare shelf. Our sleep calculator is a place to start.

What to ignore

Not supported Deliberate tanning and Melanotan injections ("tanmaxxing"), bone-smashing, mewing-for-jawline, and unregulated peptides or SARMs. These are either unproven or actively dangerous — we cover them honestly in the looksmaxxing myths, rated hub, rather than pretending there are two sides.

The honest summary

If you did only two things, they'd be: wear sunscreen every morning, and sleep properly. Add a retinoid if ageing is your focus. That's most of the available benefit, for very little money — and none of it involves rating your face or hitting it with anything.
