What it is
Collagen is the main structural protein in connective tissue — tendons, ligaments, skin and cartilage. As a supplement it's usually sold as hydrolysed collagen (collagen peptides), an animal-derived powder.
What the evidence shows
Tendons, joints and connective tissue. Preliminary· human data This is the interesting, emerging use: some evidence that collagen (often with vitamin C, taken shortly before loading the tissue) may support tendon and joint health and ease some joint pain. Promising and plausible, but still preliminary.
Skin. Preliminary· human data Some trials report modest improvements in skin hydration and elasticity. The effects are small and the research is heavily commercial, so keep expectations measured.
Building muscle. Marketing claim Collagen is a poor muscle-building protein — it lacks enough leucine and is an incomplete protein. For muscle, whey or a good mixed-protein diet beats it easily. Counting collagen toward your protein target for muscle is a mistake.
Who it suits
People focused on tendon, joint or skin support who understand the evidence is early — not people looking for a muscle-building protein.
Practical notes
Hydrolysed collagen (peptides) is the studied, absorbable form, commonly paired with vitamin C and taken before loading the target tissue. It is animal-derived (not vegan). For muscle, reach for whey or another quality protein instead.
