16:8 bulk built the same muscle with less fat

Conventional bulking advice pushes frequent meals across a long eating window, on the logic that a surplus is easier to hit and muscle gain easier to support. Time-restricted eating pulls in the opposite direction, compressing intake into a fixed window, and it is unclear whether that compromises a deliberate gaining phase. The practical worry is that a shorter window makes it hard to eat enough protein and total energy, blunting muscle and strength gains. This trial tested whether a 16:8 schedule during an intentional surplus changes nutrient intake, body composition, maximal strength or resting hormones.

What they did

Twenty-three healthy resistance-trained individuals were randomly assigned to a time-restricted eating group following a 16:8 protocol or a control group. All completed intense resistance training three times per week for 12 weeks and were instructed to eat 300 to 500 kcal above their individualised daily energy requirements. Body composition was measured by single-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis and 1-repetition maximum performance was tested every four weeks. Hormone levels were taken at baseline and after the intervention, and participants completed the Hooper well-being questionnaire daily.

What they found

The time-restricted group ate significantly less than prescribed — 31.86 versus a 37.50 kcal/kg target — with lower protein (1.44 versus 1.60 g/kg) and carbohydrate (3.97 versus 5.27 g/kg) intake. Despite that shortfall, increases in fat-free mass (+1.34 versus +1.38 kg) and muscle mass (+1.07 versus +1.13 kg) were similar between groups. The control group gained significantly more body weight (+3.90 versus +2.19 kg) and fat mass (+4.36 versus +2.00 kg). Strength gains matched closely for both deadlift and bench press, and there were no meaningful group differences in hormone levels or well-being scores.

Where it fits

The result complicates the assumption that a long eating window is necessary to gain muscle, while also illustrating why timing studies are hard to interpret: the window changed how much people ate, so intake and timing are entangled. It is consistent with the broader picture that total energy drives fat accumulation, and that once protein and training are adequate, lean gains follow. Whether a 16:8 window would still spare fat if participants genuinely hit the prescribed surplus is the obvious unanswered question. The small sample and impedance-based body composition also limit precision.

What it means for you

This is a reason to think a compressed eating window does not obviously sabotage a training block aimed at gaining size and strength, at least over three months. It is also a reminder that shorter windows tend to reduce how much you eat, which is why the leaner outcome appeared. If you struggle to eat enough during a gaining phase, a restricted window may make that harder rather than easier. The findings describe what happened in one small trial, not a template to copy.
