Stretching and Warm-Ups: What Actually Does What

Stretching does some things well. Preventing injury is not reliably one of them — strength training is.

What this is

Stretching became synonymous with injury prevention through repetition rather than evidence. The most-cited synthesis on the question — a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials covering 26,610 people and 3,464 injuries — found consistently favourable results for every prevention measure it examined except stretching, and found strength training reduced sports injuries dramatically, with the strength-training estimate landing around a two-thirds reduction.

That doesn't make stretching useless. It changes what it's for: increasing range of motion, which it reliably does, and feeling ready to move, which matters more than it sounds.

What the evidence says

What this means in practice

  • Warm up by ramping the movement you're about to do, not by holding stretches.
  • If you want more range, stretch regularly and expect it to take weeks — that's the mechanism working, not a shortcut.
  • If you want fewer injuries, lift. That's where the effect size is.
  • Save long static holds for after training or separate sessions if you're doing anything explosive.
  • Train through full range under load; it builds range and strength at once.

When to see a doctor

  • Joint locking, giving way, or significant swelling.
  • Loss of range after an injury that isn't improving.
  • Numbness, tingling or weakness with stretching — that's nerve involvement, not tightness.

The honest summary

Stretching increases range of motion and doesn't prevent injuries. Strength training prevents injuries and increases range when done through full motion. If you only have time for one, the meta-analysis is unambiguous about which.
