Training and the Menstrual Cycle: What the Evidence Supports
The honest state of the science on cycle-phase performance, and why "train with your cycle" outruns it.
What this is
Hormones across the menstrual cycle do measurable things, so the idea that performance follows them is reasonable. The question is how large the effect is and whether it's consistent enough to plan around.
The largest systematic review and meta-analysis on the question concluded that performance may be trivially reduced in the early follicular phase compared with other phases — and then, unusually, argued against general guidelines on the basis of its own findings, citing the tiny effect size, the large variation between studies and the poor quality of much of the evidence. A 2025 review restricted to studies using high methodological standards reached similarly cautious conclusions. What that supports is an individual approach, not a phase-based plan.

What this means in practice
- Track how you actually feel and perform across a few cycles before letting anyone tell you what your pattern is.
- Adjust sessions on symptoms and readiness rather than on the calendar — the same principle any good programme uses.
- Get iron checked if you're training hard and feeling flat, particularly with heavy periods.
- Treat severe symptoms as treatable rather than as a fixed constraint on your training.
- Keep the fundamentals in place — progressive overload, adequate energy, sleep. They outweigh phase timing by a wide margin.
When to see a doctor
- Periods that have stopped for three or more months without an explanation.
- Bleeding heavy enough to cause fatigue, or requiring hourly protection changes.
- Pain that stops you working, training or sleeping.
- Fatigue with breathlessness or pallor — get iron and haemoglobin checked.
The honest summary
The evidence supports paying attention to your own pattern and treating your symptoms. It does not support a phase-by-phase training plan, and the most useful thing on this page for most women is the iron test.

- The meta-analytic evidence found only a trivial average effect and its authors advised against general phase-based guidelines, recommending an individual approach instead. Adjust for how you feel; don't buy a plan built on phases.
- Is it harder to build muscle at certain times of the month?
- There's no reliable evidence for meaningful phase-based differences in training adaptation. Total training volume, protein intake and sleep are the levers with actual evidence behind them.
- Does hormonal contraception affect performance?
- Meta-analyses find any average effect on performance is small, with wide individual variation. It's worth noting how you respond, but it isn't a reason to change contraception — that's a clinical decision.
