Louisiana has confirmed nine Vibrio vulnificus infections this year; all nine people were hospitalised and five died, against a decade average of seven cases and one death for the same period. Officials urge immediate medical care if a wound exposed to brackish or salt water becomes red, swollen, painful, warm or discoloured.
