Why it matters

Thirty-two trials with 1491 participants were eligible for the meta-analysis. Study quality was assessed with the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool, and effects were pooled as standardised mean differences using random-effects models. Meta-regression, sensitivity and subgroup analyses probed whether trial characteristics influenced the overall results.

This is a reason to take deeply coloured plant foods seriously as more than garnish: the compounds that give them their colour improved blood sugar markers and cholesterol in pooled trial data.
