Aerobic exercise outdoes traditional Chinese exercise for student sleep

Why it matters

Poor sleep is widespread among university students, and exercise is one of the few drug-free remedies with a serious evidence base behind it. But exercise is not one thing: traditional Chinese exercises, gentler mind-body practices, are often promoted for sleep alongside conventional aerobic training such as running or cycling. Students choosing between them have had little to go on, because most trials test one approach against doing nothing rather than against each other. This review set out to compare the two forms head to head and to ask what dose of exercise works best for sleep in this population.

What they did

The authors pooled data from 21 randomised controlled trials with a total of 1252 university student participants, analysing them with a random-effects model. They compared the overall effect of traditional Chinese exercises against that of general aerobic exercise on sleep quality. They also ran subgroup analyses on three variables that might shape the result: how long each session lasted, how many sessions were done per week, and how many weeks the programme ran for.

What they found

Both forms of exercise significantly improved students' sleep, but general aerobic exercise produced the larger effect, and the difference between the two approaches was statistically significant. Improvements showed up across the board: subjective sleep quality, how quickly people fell asleep, sleep duration, sleep efficiency, sleep disturbance, use of sleep medication and daytime function. In the subgroup analyses, sessions of 40 to 60 minutes outperformed sessions of 60 to 90 minutes, exercising 3 to 5 times a week beat twice a week, and programmes of 2 to 4 weeks showed larger effects than those running 6 to 18 weeks.

Where it fits

The finding that exercise improves sleep is well established; the contribution here is the direct comparison, which hands the advantage to conventional aerobic training over traditional Chinese exercises in this age group. The dose findings complicate a common assumption that more is better: longer sessions and longer programmes did not produce bigger effects in this pooling. Open questions remain about why shorter programmes looked stronger, whether the gains persist once the programme ends, and whether the same pattern holds in older adults or people with clinically diagnosed insomnia rather than student sleep problems.

What it means for you

If you struggle with sleep and are weighing up what kind of movement to add, this is a reason to think ordinary aerobic exercise, the running and cycling variety, may do more for sleep than gentler traditional practices, at least if you are young. It also suggests the useful dose is moderate rather than heroic: mid-length sessions a few times a week performed best in these trials. None of this settles the question for other age groups, and gentler forms still helped, so this is evidence for ranking options rather than ruling any out.
