Fitness trackers really do shift weight, and longer use works better

Why it matters

Wearable devices like step counters and smartwatches promise to nudge people into moving more, but a promise is not the same as a measured effect on the scale. The researchers searched electronic databases including EBSCO, ScienceDirect and PubMed from the first available date up to January 9, 2019 for eligible randomised controlled trials. They identified 19 trials in which wearable technologies were deployed as physical activity interventions and weight-related outcomes were measured. All analyses used a random-effects model, and moderator analyses explored whether the effect differed by participant characteristics or how long the devices were used. Meta-regression was also run to test whether longer treatment translated into greater weight change.
