Why it matters

Wearable trackers have become one of the most popular tools healthy adults use to monitor their own movement, and the implicit promise is behaviour change: wear the device, walk more, weigh less. Measuring activity is not the same as increasing it, though, and self-monitoring only earns its place if it actually shifts what people do. Individual trials of trackers have pointed in different directions, so pooling them is the way to find out whether the average effect is real, how big it is, and whether it reaches the outcome many buyers care about most, which is weight.

What they did

The authors ran a systematic review and pooled analysis following PRISMA methodology. They searched MEDLINE, CINAHL, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, PubMed and Scopus for English-language randomised controlled trials published between 2000 and 2017, each with more than 20 participants, where an intervention group used a wearable tracker. Eligible studies reported steps per day, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, energy expenditure or weight reduction. Twelve studies with 1693 participants qualified, with a weighted average age of 40.7 years, 64.4% women, and a mean intervention length of 21.4 weeks.
