Trials in people with obesity have tested the idea for years, but the results have been inconsistent, with dosage, extract type and trial duration all varying widely between studies. That leaves consumers with no clear answer on whether green tea supplements actually shift weight, and if so by how much. This review pooled the randomised evidence and examined how dose and duration affect the outcome.

What they did

The authors searched several databases from inception to September 2019 for clinical trials that tested green tea supplements against obesity measures in humans. Results were pooled using a random-effects model, which allows for the fact that trials differed in design, dose and length. The outcomes examined included body weight, body mass index and waist circumference. The team also ran a dose-response evaluation to see whether the amount of green tea taken, and the duration of supplementation, changed the size of the effect.

What they found

Green tea supplementation was followed by an average weight reduction of 1.78 kg and a BMI drop of 0.65 kg/m² compared with controls, both statistically significant. Waist circumference told a more tangled story: it shrank significantly only in trials using at least 800 mg a day, by 2.06 cm, or lasting under 12 weeks, by 2.39 cm. The dose-response analysis added a further wrinkle, finding a larger weight reduction when the dose was below 500 mg a day and treatment lasted 12 weeks. The dose patterns, in short, did not line up neatly with each other.

Where it fits

The pooled result supports the idea that green tea has a real but small effect on obesity measures, which is consistent with the long-running ambiguity in individual trials: an effect this size is easy for a single small study to miss. The inconsistent dose findings, where weight responded more at lower doses but waistlines only at higher ones, remain unexplained and are an open question for future work. The authors position green tea as a possible companion to a balanced diet and regular physical exercise rather than a standalone treatment for obesity.

What it means for you

If you have seen green tea sold as a fat-burner, this is the honest size of the effect in pooled trials: less than two kilograms of body weight and well under one BMI point. That is measurable, and it may matter at the margins, but it is not a substitute for the fundamentals of energy balance. The muddled dose-response results mean nobody can yet say what amount, if any, is optimal. This is information about averages across trials in people with obesity, not a recommendation.
