Results were pooled to estimate the average difference between intervention and control groups in C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, adiponectin and waist circumference.

That diet and exercise shrink waistlines is not news; the more interesting contribution here is the consistent movement in inflammatory markers, which supports the idea that lifestyle change improves the biology underneath metabolic syndrome and not just its visible measures. The evidence base is modest at six trials, and the authors are open that the mechanisms behind the inflammatory improvements still need clarifying. This pooled analysis also cannot separate how much the diet component and the exercise component each contributed. Higher-quality trials are the stated next step.
What it means for you
For anyone carrying weight around the middle alongside other metabolic warning signs, this is a reason to think sustained changes to eating and activity do more than trim centimetres: in these trials they also lowered blood markers of inflammation over 6 to 12 months.
