Why it matters
Sleep in the months after childbirth is famously fragmented, and poor postpartum sleep quality is not just miserable: evidence suggests it is a risk factor for developing postpartum depression. Sleeping pills are an unattractive option for many new mothers, which has driven interest in non-drug approaches. A range of such interventions has been developed, but it has been unclear whether they genuinely improve maternal sleep and which types work best. This review pulled the trials together to find out, and also asked whether any benefits reach maternal mood and infant sleep.
What they did
The researchers searched five databases, MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Web of Science, from their beginnings to September 2017. That sweep produced 15 eligible studies testing non-pharmacological sleep interventions for mothers in the postpartum period. The team pooled the results in a meta-analysis, compared the effectiveness of different intervention types on maternal sleep, and separately examined secondary effects on maternal mood and on infants' night-time sleep.

Overall, the interventions improved mothers' own reports of their sleep by a moderate margin. Massage stood out with the largest effect on sleep quality, and exercise followed close behind. Interventions as a group were also linked with a small improvement in infants' night-time sleep. Maternal depression, however, did not improve significantly, so better-rated sleep did not translate into measurably better mood across these trials.
Where it fits
The results support the idea that postpartum sleep is modifiable without medication, which matters given the suggested link between poor postpartum sleep and depression risk. But the improvements were measured by mothers' subjective reports rather than objective sleep recording, and the authors call for research on whether effects hold up on objective measures and how durable they are. The absence of any shift in depression also leaves open whether improving sleep this way changes the outcome that motivated the field in the first place.

For anyone in the fog of new parenthood, this is evidence that some accessible, drug-free options have moved the needle on how mothers rate their sleep, with massage and exercise leading the pack. It is worth holding the finding at its true size: mothers felt they slept better, but no objective measure verified it, and mood did not measurably lift.
