Why it matters

Blood cholesterol, and LDL cholesterol in particular, is one of the most consequential numbers in preventive health, and food-based ways to nudge it are perennially attractive. Fermented milk products containing live probiotic bacteria have been suggested as a supplementary therapy for blood lipids for years, but individual clinical trials have produced conflicting results. Why men appeared to respond more strongly is also unexplained by this analysis.

What it means for you

If fermented milk products such as probiotic yoghurts or drinks already feature in your diet, this is a reason to think they may be doing your cholesterol a small favour, particularly over the longer term. The effect size is honest grounds for modest expectations rather than a strategy: nothing here suggests these products substitute for anything your doctor recommends about lipids. The absence of any effect on HDL and triglycerides overall is worth knowing too, since marketing rarely draws that distinction.
