Cognitive function accounted for 21 of the significant associations, with the rest spread across blood glucose, lipid profiles, oxidative stress markers, inflammatory markers and other indicators.
Where it fits
This is presented as the first synthesis of the overall strength of probiotic evidence in this space, and it lands more favourably than sceptics might expect: the cognitive associations came out with moderate to high quality backing. That said, the median number of studies behind each association was just 3, and the trials themselves were small and short. The authors are explicit that further clinical trials are needed to pin down which probiotic strains, doses and intervention durations actually drive the outcomes. Until then, the field knows the direction better than the details.

If you already take a probiotic, this review is a reason to regard the cognitive angle as more than marketing, since the evidence behind it graded reasonably well by a strict standard.
