Outcomes covered gut bacterial composition, short-chain fatty acids and inflammatory markers in the blood.
What they found
Prebiotics and probiotics both increased the abundance of Bifidobacterium, a genus generally regarded as beneficial, with prebiotics showing the larger shift. Synbiotics showed no overall Bifidobacterium effect but did raise specific strains, including B. angulatum, B. longum and B. breve. Probiotics increased overall microbial diversity, while synbiotics raised Lactobacillus casei, reduced Pseudomonas, and increased the short-chain fatty acids valeric acid and acetic acid. On inflammation, prebiotics raised the anti-inflammatory marker IL-10 and lowered IL-1β, and synbiotics lowered TNF-α.
Where it fits
This pooling fills a stated gap: evidence on gut supplements specifically in older adults had been scattered across small trials.
