Why it matters

How often to train each muscle is one of the oldest arguments in lifting. Classic body-part splits hammer a muscle hard once a week, while full-body and upper-lower approaches spread the work across two or more sessions. Frequency can mean the total number of weekly training sessions or how many times a specific muscle group gets trained, and both versions of the question matter to anyone planning a programme. This review set out to establish whether frequency itself, separate from total training volume, changes how much muscle people build.

What they did

The researchers systematically reviewed trials that directly compared different weekly resistance training frequencies using traditional dynamic exercise with coupled lifting and lowering actions. Eligible studies had to measure morphologic changes via biopsy, imaging, circumference or densitometry, last a minimum of 4 weeks, and use human participants without chronic disease or injury. Ten studies met the criteria. The key analysis focused on comparisons where muscle groups were trained between 1 and 3 days per week on a volume-equated basis, isolating frequency as the variable of interest.

What they found

Training frequency had a significant impact on hypertrophy, with higher frequency associated with a larger effect than lower frequency, 0.49 versus 0.30. On a volume-equated basis, training each muscle group twice a week promoted superior growth compared with once a week. The question of whether three sessions per muscle beats two could not be answered, as reliable estimates could not be generated. Likewise, analyses of total session frequency with muscle-group frequency matched could not be carried out because of inadequate sample size.

Where it fits

This result challenged the traditional once-a-week body-part split that dominated bodybuilding culture for decades, and supported the shift towards training muscles more often with the same total work redistributed across the week. It sits alongside evidence on volume and load as one of the core programming variables examined in this literature. The biggest open question it leaves is the ceiling: whether training a muscle three times per week offers anything beyond a twice-weekly approach remains to be determined.

What it means for you

If you currently train each muscle once a week, this is a reason to think redistributing that same work across two weekly sessions could yield more growth. The finding is about distribution, not addition: the advantage appeared when weekly volume was held equal, so it does not imply doing more total work. For those already hitting muscles twice weekly, there is no evidence here that a third session is better, only that the question has not been answered.
