Resistance training is the standard tool for building the strength and power those actions demand, yet the studies testing it in handball players have produced conflicting results. That leaves coaches designing gym programmes without a clear picture of what the weights room actually transfers to the court. This review pooled the available evidence to measure the effect of resistance training on strength, power and throwing velocity in handball players specifically.

What they did

A comprehensive literature search identified 18 studies suitable for inclusion, together covering 275 handball players. The analyses estimated the overall effect of resistance training and then broke it down by outcome: isokinetic strength, isometric strength, maximal strength, muscle power of the upper and lower limbs, and ball-throwing velocity. A multivariate meta-regression additionally tested whether factors such as publication year, country, gender and playing level influenced the results, and the authors examined how much the studies disagreed with each other and whether favourable findings were more likely to reach print.

What they found

The overall pooled effect of resistance training was large, at 0.996. Broken down by outcome, the biggest effects appeared for maximal strength at 1.824 and throwing velocity at 1.360, with muscle power at 0.892 and a smaller but still significant effect on isometric strength at 0.398. Isokinetic strength was the exception: at 0.079, the effect was not significant. The meta-regression found that publication year, country, gender and playing level all significantly influenced the results, and the authors flag substantial disagreement between studies alongside evidence that favourable results were likelier to be published.

Where it fits

The direction of the finding matches what strength and conditioning practice already assumes: gym-based resistance work transfers to the explosive qualities handball rewards, particularly throwing. The null result for isokinetic strength complicates the picture, suggesting the gains do not register equally on every kind of strength test. The authors themselves urge caution, because the included studies disagreed substantially with each other and favourable results appear likelier to have been published, both of which tend to inflate pooled effects.
