Performance was analysed across 12 cognitive domains, including intelligence, verbal fluency, processing speed, working memory, attention, problem solving and executive functions, impulsivity, verbal and visual learning and memory, and visuospatial abilities. Within each domain, separate effect estimates were calculated for three stages of abstinence: short term at under 1 month, intermediate term at 2 to 12 months, and long term at over 1 year.

In short-term abstinence, moderate impairment appeared across 11 of the 12 cognitive domains, showing the damage is broad rather than confined to a few functions. Strikingly, little improved over the following months: moderate impairment persisted across 10 domains during intermediate-term abstinence of 2 to 12 months. Only in the long-term group, past 1 year of sobriety, did the deficits shrink to small effects.
