Marshmallow root, like slippery elm, is high in soothing mucilage and is used traditionally for irritated throats, coughs and digestive-tract comfort.

The demulcent mechanism is reasonable, but rigorous clinical trials are scarce and its reputation rests mainly on long traditional use. It is generally well tolerated and, being a fibre, may slow absorption of medicines taken alongside it.
