Spirulina is a protein- and nutrient-dense blue-green algae taken as a general 'superfood' and studied for metabolic and immune effects.
Some small trials suggest modest improvements in cholesterol, blood pressure and allergic-rhinitis symptoms, but the evidence is preliminary. A real concern is contamination: some products (especially certain wild or poorly-controlled sources) can carry toxins or heavy metals, so sourcing and testing matter.
