Why it matters

Memory decline is one of the most feared aspects of ageing, and exercise is among the few widely accessible tools with plausible brain benefits. Aerobic exercise has attracted most of the attention in cognition research, leaving the effect of resistance training on memory comparatively unsettled. Memory is also not one thing: working, immediate, short-term, verbal and delayed memory can respond quite differently to the same intervention. This review set out to establish whether regular resistance training improves memory in older adults, and which types of memory, if any, actually benefit.

What they did

The reviewers searched eight databases, including PubMed, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE and Web of Science alongside four Chinese-language databases, for trials published up to March 24, 2021. They included randomised controlled trials comparing regular resistance training against no specific exercise or low-intensity exercise in older adults. Eighteen trials met the criteria, covering 1365 participants in total. Results were pooled following Cochrane methods, with memory outcomes grouped into working, immediate, short-term, verbal and delayed memory.

What they found

Regular resistance training significantly improved working memory, immediate memory and short-term memory compared with control conditions, with the largest pooled effect appearing for short-term memory. Verbal memory showed no significant benefit, and delayed memory showed essentially no effect at all. The picture is therefore selective rather than sweeping: some memory systems responded to lifting while others did not. The authors caution that limitations in the included trials mean the findings should be interpreted carefully rather than taken as settled.

Where it fits

This adds resistance training to the evidence base for exercise and cognition, which has historically leaned on aerobic work, and it does so with a reasonably large pooled sample. The selective pattern, with gains in working and short-term memory but not delayed recall, raises questions about which brain processes strength training actually touches. It remains unclear what dose, intensity or duration of training drives the benefit, and whether the effects persist over time or translate into everyday function. Better-designed trials would firm up both the size and the boundaries of the effect.

What it means for you

For older adults, this is a reason to see the weights room as potentially useful for the mind as well as the muscles, particularly for the kind of memory used to hold and juggle information in the moment. It is equally a reason to keep expectations specific: the pooled trials found no benefit for verbal or delayed memory, so lifting is not a general shield against memory decline. The cognitive case adds to, rather than replaces, the established physical reasons for older adults to train.
