Why it matters
Executive functions are the mental skills that let people plan, hold information in mind and switch flexibly between tasks, and they matter enormously for staying independent in later life. Resistance training already earns its place in older age for strength and physical function, so any cognitive benefit would come at no extra cost. What has been less clear is whether lifting actually moves the needle on these mental skills in older adults who are cognitively healthy, and whether it does so any better than other kinds of exercise. This review set out to answer both questions in community-dwelling adults aged 60 and over.
What they did
The researchers systematically searched four major databases, PubMed, Web of Science, SCOPUS and EMBASE, for randomised controlled trials of resistance exercise in adults aged 60 or more, covering papers published up to February 17, 2025. The outcomes of interest were three core executive functions: inhibitory control, working memory and cognitive flexibility. Risk of bias in each trial was assessed with the Cochrane RoB 2.0 tool and the overall quality of the evidence was formally graded. Twenty-two trials met the inclusion criteria, and 17 of them provided data suitable for the meta-analysis.
What they found
Compared with control conditions, resistance training significantly improved working memory, with a standardised mean difference of 0.30, and cognitive flexibility, with a standardised mean difference of 0.50 in favour of training. Inhibitory control, the third executive function examined, showed no significant improvement. Crucially, when resistance training was compared with other exercise interventions rather than with inactive controls, no significant differences emerged for working memory, inhibitory control or cognitive flexibility. The authors also flagged substantial variation in the training protocols used, a high risk of bias across the included studies and low certainty in the evidence overall.
Where it fits
This synthesis adds weight to the broader picture that structured exercise supports the ageing brain, and it extends that picture to resistance training specifically rather than leaving the cognitive case to aerobic work alone. At the same time, it complicates any claim that lifting is uniquely brain-boosting, since it performed no better than other exercise modalities in head-to-head comparisons. Open questions remain about which training parameters matter, since protocols varied so much across trials, and the authors call for high-quality trials with standardised programmes before firmer conclusions can be drawn.
What it means for you
For an older adult, or anyone thinking ahead to later life, this is a reason to view strength training as an investment in more than muscle: the pooled data link it to better working memory and mental flexibility than doing nothing. It is not, on this evidence, a reason to swap a walking, swimming or cycling habit for the weights room, because lifting showed no cognitive edge over other exercise. The honest reading is that moving regularly in some structured way is what the ageing brain seems to reward, and resistance training is one valid way to do it.
