What it is

Glucosamine and chondroitin are components of cartilage, sold, often together, as joint supplements. Glucosamine is frequently derived from shellfish, so people with a shellfish allergy should check the source.

What the evidence shows

Joint pain and osteoarthritis. Silver· human data The evidence is genuinely mixed. Large trials have conflicted: some people with osteoarthritis report modest pain relief, while well-controlled studies often show little better than placebo. It is a reasonable trial-and-see, not a sure thing.

Prevention in healthy joints. Unproven There is little evidence they prevent joint problems or benefit healthy joints; most research is in people who already have osteoarthritis.

Who it suits

People with existing joint pain who want to test whether they are among the responders, rather than athletes using it preventively.

Practical notes

If someone responds, it typically takes several weeks. If there is no change after a couple of months, continuing is unlikely to help. It can interact with blood-thinning medication and may affect blood-sugar control, so seek advice if either applies.
