Why it matters
Dyslipidaemia — an unhealthy pattern of blood fats — is a known risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and interest in food-derived compounds that might improve it keeps growing. Curcuminoids, the active constituents of turmeric, are frequently paired with piperine from black pepper, and research suggests the combination can alter serum lipids. Individual trials, however, have produced inconsistent findings, leaving the overall effect unclear. This meta-analysis set out to pool the randomised evidence and establish what curcuminoids plus piperine actually do to the standard lipid panel in adults.
What they did
The authors systematically searched databases up to August 2025 for randomised controlled trials of curcuminoids plus piperine co-supplementation in adults. Sixteen RCTs qualified, encompassing 1038 participants — 522 in intervention groups and 516 in controls. For each lipid outcome, they calculated weighted mean differences with 95% confidence intervals and pooled them using a random-effects model to account for variability between studies. The panel assessed comprised triglycerides, total cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.
What they found
The combination significantly reduced triglycerides, with a weighted mean difference of -18.64 mg/mL, and total cholesterol, at -6.58 mg/mL. HDL cholesterol — the fraction where higher is generally regarded as favourable — rose by 1.51 mg/mL. LDL cholesterol, however, did not fall significantly: the pooled difference of -2.20 mg/mL had a confidence interval spanning -7.22 to 2.80. The authors report that benefits were most pronounced with more prolonged supplementation and in individuals with dyslipidaemia, metabolic disorders and overweight.
Where it fits
This pooling helps resolve the inconsistency across individual curcumin trials by showing which lipid fractions respond and which do not.
