Why it matters

Unhealthy blood lipid levels are a major risk factor for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and interest in food-derived compounds that might help has long outrun clear answers. Curcumin, the compound derived from turmeric, has been tested in dozens of trials for effects on lipid metabolism, producing a stack of overlapping reviews with varying conclusions. This umbrella review set out to gather all of those reviews, add newly published trials, and settle what curcumin supplementation actually does to cholesterol and triglycerides, and whether the changes are large enough to matter for patients.

The authors searched electronic databases through the end of March 2023, without language restrictions, for systematic reviews and meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials comparing curcumin supplementation with placebo on total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides. Twenty-six reviews met the inclusion criteria, from which 53 unique trials were re-pooled, and a fresh search added 19 more, bringing the updated meta-analysis to 72 trials. The team also judged whether the pooled changes reached minimally clinically important differences, the threshold at which a change is considered meaningful for patients.
