Why it matters

Elastic bands are the cheapest and most portable form of resistance training there is, which makes them a tempting substitute for a gym membership. Their effectiveness had already been demonstrated in older adults, and in adults when combined with the resistance from fixed loads such as weights. What was less clear is whether bands used entirely on their own can build strength and functional capacity in healthy adults, or whether they only work as a supplement to conventional kit. That is the gap this review set out to fill.

What they did

The authors searched four databases, MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, PEDro and Web of Knowledge, for controlled clinical trials in English testing elastic resistance exercise as an isolated method in healthy adults. From 93 articles identified by the search, 5 met the inclusion criteria, and 3 of those scored as high quality on the PEDro scale. Mean differences and overall effects were calculated, comparing band training against both passive controls, meaning no intervention, and active controls performing other forms of resistance training.

Against doing nothing, elastic resistance exercise came out clearly ahead on both muscle strength and functional performance. Against active controls, the picture split: bands produced similar strength gains to other resistance training methods, but were inferior on functional performance. In other words, the pooled evidence supports bands as a genuine strength-building tool while suggesting other methods may transfer better to functional tasks. Nothing in the comparisons showed bands to be superior to conventional resistance training.

Where it fits

If access, cost or travel keeps you away from a gym, this is a reason to think a band-based programme is not a compromise where strength is concerned. Either way, the evidence base is small, so treat the equivalence as probable rather than proven.
