    Over a 10-month Antarctic overwintering at Concordia Station, 12 crew members reported progressively rising loneliness and conflict while cohesion and individual performance declined.     Slow breathing cut chronic pain by up to 37% in the strongest trials

    In a systematic review of ten randomised trials in adults with chronic pain conditions such as neck pain, low back pain, fibromyalgia and tension-type headache, the two trials judged at low risk of bias, both testing 15 minutes of daily slow diaphragmatic breathing, showed clinically relevant pain reductions of up to 37%. The reviewers stress that the overall evidence remains sparse.

    A single mind-body session eases anxiety most

    A network meta-analysis of 33 studies in 1121 adolescents and young adults found a single session of mind-body exercise was the most effective type for reducing anxiety (SMD -0.36), aerobic exercise also produced significant reductions (SMD -0.16), while resistance and multicomponent exercise did not.

    Sitting time tracked depression more than exercise did

    In a meta-analysis of 36 observational studies of university students, higher sedentary behaviour was significantly associated with greater depression risk (pooled OR 1.60, 95% CI 1.26 to 2.04), while the apparently protective association for higher physical activity (OR 0.53, 95% CI 0.27 to 1.07) did not reach statistical significance. Pooled correlations between activity level and depressive symptoms were inverse but extremely heterogeneous.

    What it shows: Meta-analysis of 36 mostly cross-sectional observational studies in university students (30,307 people in the correlation analysis), with substantial to extreme heterogeneity (I2 94.4% and 99.2%), samples skewed towards China, and only 2 studies behind the sedentary estimate.     Fitter hearts, sharper minds in healthy older adults

    Aerobic exercise programmes that raised older adults' cardiorespiratory fitness by roughly 14% coincided with improvements in cognitive function, with the largest effects on motor function (effect size 1.17) and auditory attention (0.50). Most individual comparisons, however, showed no significant effect, and the review could not confirm the fitness gain itself drives the cognitive benefit.

    Depression tracks with smaller memory-region volume

    Among 2009 cognitively unimpaired older adults aged 50 to 90, those with depression had a smaller CA23DG hippocampal subfield than those without, independent of brain amyloid and tau; within the depressed group, people using antidepressants had smaller CA1 and CA23DG volumes than those who did not.

    Your chair may be nudging how much risk you take

    An environment quietly engineered to push people into an expansive rather than contractive posture reliably increased risk-taking on the balloon analogue risk task, an effect that held after accounting for discomfort with the posture and awareness of the manipulation. Effects on self-reported pride were partially mediated by participants' measured neck angle.

    Five days of digital practice eased insomnia

    In a three-arm randomised trial of 122 UK undergraduates, five consecutive days of digital attachment security priming or mindfulness practice both produced significant longer-term improvements in stress, insomnia, emotion regulation and academic dropout intention compared with a waitlist control. Attachment priming produced the most consistent and substantial benefits across the follow-up points.

    Online laughter yoga beat in-person for nurses' sleep

    In a pilot trial with 47 nurses, four laughter yoga sessions delivered online over two weeks significantly improved sleep quality, emotional exhaustion and personal accomplishment, while the same programme delivered face-to-face produced no significant change. Perceived stress did not shift in any group.

    Umbrella review finds no serotonin link to depression

    An umbrella review of 17 studies across all the main strands of serotonin research found no consistent evidence that depression is associated with lowered serotonin concentration or activity, including in genetic analyses of 115,257 and 43,165 people. Some evidence was consistent with long-term antidepressant use reducing serotonin concentrations.

    What it shows: A systematic umbrella review of existing reviews and meta-analyses searched to December 2020, so it inherits their limitations: quality was variable, many meta-analyses overlapped, prior antidepressant use was not reliably excluded, and no systematic review of tryptophan depletion studies has been done since 2007.     Language learning and cardio: different memory wins

    In a randomised trial of 142 healthy older adults, six months of foreign-language learning kept the CA3/dentate gyrus region of the hippocampus stable while the non-language groups lost volume, whereas aerobic exercise, not language, improved memory precision on a mnemonic discrimination task. Combining both was the only way to get both effects, but the combination did not amplify either one.
