    Adding high-intensity interval training to a lifting programme did not compromise muscle hypertrophy or upper-body strength gains in a meta-analysis, though lower-body strength gains were slightly reduced (effect size -0.248): a penalty that trended larger with cycling-based HIIT than with running.

    Cardio can eat into lifting gains: how much depends on the dose and the modality

    A meta-analysis of 21 studies found endurance training done alongside lifting reduced gains in hypertrophy, strength and especially power versus lifting alone, with interference worsening as endurance frequency and duration increased. Running, but not cycling, was linked to significant decrements in hypertrophy and strength in this analysis.

    Strength training helps sarcopenic obesity even when body composition won't budge

    In older adults with sarcopenic obesity, high-speed circuit resistance training significantly improved muscle strength and physical function, even though neither exercise nor an extra 15 g of daily protein changed body composition.

    Stopping training doesn't erase your gains overnight

    Across 86 randomised trials (n=5,670), many exercise-induced gains, including body mass, waist circumference and maximal oxygen uptake, remained better than baseline even after training stopped, with residual benefits fading in an outcome-specific, time-dependent way while muscle mass, resting heart rate and LDL cholesterol benefits did not persist.

    Resistance training cut CRP in older adults

    A meta-analysis of 18 randomised controlled trials in 539 adults aged 60 and over found resistance training reduced C-reactive protein (effect size -0.72), TNF-α (-0.56) and IL-10 (-3.34), and tended to reduce IL-6 (-0.59). The CRP reduction held across every subgroup, including age, training method, intensity, weekly frequency and programme duration.

    Across 12 studies of 859 team-sport athletes, adding blood flow restriction to resistance training produced small additional gains in muscle hypertrophy (SMD 0.32) and strength (SMD 0.42) compared with resistance training alone. Jumping and sprinting performance showed no statistically significant difference.

    One quick stretch won't move your hamstrings

    In a dose-response meta-analysis of 84 trials (3008 non-athletes, 1059 athletes) with clinically confirmed hamstring shortening, static stretching improved range of motion versus no intervention (active knee extension 9.03°, passive knee extension 8.44°, straight leg raise 12.11°), while proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation gained 10.10° on active knee extension and held a small 3.18° advantage over static stretching. A brief 1.5-minute single session did not exceed the 12° minimal detectable change, whereas repeated stretching over at least 1 week totalling 70 minutes was more likely to.

    Fasting didn't blunt gains from lifting in 11 trials

    An exploratory multilevel meta-analysis of 11 trials in 303 generally healthy, mostly young adults found that adding intermittent fasting, usually time-restricted eating, to resistance training produced broadly similar adaptations to resistance training alone (g = 0.09, 95% CI −0.23 to 0.40). There were no clear differences in maximal strength, local muscular endurance, hypertrophy-related outcomes or explosive and high-speed performance.

    Lifting lowers blood pressure after menopause

    Pooling 60 controlled trials in postmenopausal women, resistance training of at least four weeks significantly lowered systolic (g=0.68) and mean blood pressure (g=0.68), with smaller reductions in resting heart rate (g=0.30) and diastolic pressure (g=0.37). Echocardiographic studies reported no adverse structural changes to the heart.

    Unblinded testers inflated strength gains in trials

    Across 73 progressive resistance training trials in older adults (18 with blinded assessors, 55 unblinded), trials whose outcome assessors were blinded reported smaller lower-limb strength effects, a difference of -0.80 (95% CI -1.35 to -0.25) and -0.65 after adjusting for intention-to-treat analysis, suggesting unblinded trials exaggerated the gains.

    Pooling the only three eligible trials, totalling 37 untrained adults, blood flow restriction combined with neuromuscular electrical stimulation produced a medium but statistically non-significant effect on lower-limb muscle growth compared with control (d = 0.64, 95% CI -0.37 to 1.65, p = 0.176).

    Weights cut HbA1c and blood pressure in type 2 diabetes

    A meta-analysis of 33 randomised trials in 1,396 middle-aged and older adults with type 2 diabetes found resistance training reduced the atherogenic index of plasma (effect size -0.56) and improved glycaemic control, lowering HbA1c by 0.62% and HOMA-IR by 0.90. Systolic blood pressure fell by 3.91 mmHg and body fat by 0.54%, while VO2max rose, with stronger effects in overweight or obese participants.

    Red light therapy adds no clear strength gain

    Pooling five randomised trials in older adults (74 doing photobiomodulation plus resistance training, 72 doing sham), adding light therapy to periodised lifting did not significantly improve maximal strength (SMD 0.26, 95% CI -0.08 to 0.59; p = 0.14). A small benefit could not be ruled out.

    Hill sprints may not build the strength you think

    Hill sprints are prized for building leg strength and speed, but a meta-analysis of 13 randomised trials found no significant pooled effect of uphill running on knee strength, jump performance or aerobic capacity. Narrative evidence still hinted at better running economy, repeated sprint ability and lactate clearance.

    Core work beat ankle drills for knee arthritis pain

    In a randomised trial of 100 adults with knee osteoarthritis, adding core stability exercises to conventional knee training produced greater improvements in pain, function and mobility over 8 weeks than adding foot-ankle strengthening. Between-group differences exceeded clinically important thresholds for pain and all knee-function subscales.

    Wobbly-surface core work sharpened elite shooters' aim

    In a pilot trial with 20 national-level air pistol shooters, 8 weeks of trunk core training on unstable surfaces such as Swiss balls and BOSU balls appeared to improve postural control and shooting precision more than the same training on stable ground. After statistical correction, only 10.5-ring stability and muzzle velocity remained significant, so the rest is exploratory.

    Hip work boosted pelvic floor strength gains

    In 60 women aged 30-65 with stress or mixed urinary incontinence, six weeks of biofeedback-assisted pelvic floor training improved strength and quality of life in every group, but adding hip rotator strengthening produced the biggest strength gain, a mean difference of 4.44 cm H2O over pelvic floor training alone. Differences between groups in Oxford grading and quality of life were not statistically significant.
