    Cryotherapy chambers: the evidence still isn't there

    A Cochrane review of four small laboratory trials (64 physically active, predominantly young male adults) found insufficient, very low quality evidence that whole-body cryotherapy reduces self-reported muscle soreness or improves subjective recovery compared with rest. Confidence intervals at 24, 48 and 72 hours included no difference, and no trial actively monitored adverse events.

    Shockwave added little to exercise for jumper's knee

    Athletes with jumper's knee who added radial pressure wave (shockwave-style) therapy to daily stretching and strengthening gained no statistically significant extra benefit once symptom duration was accounted for. Both groups achieved clinically meaningful improvement over 28 weeks, though the treated group reached that threshold earlier.

    Kinesiotape barely moves the needle for shoulder pain

    Across 39 randomised trials totalling 2,481 people with rotator cuff-related shoulder pain, kinesiotape offered at best small, short-term improvements in shoulder function and pain during activity, with uncertain effects on range of motion. The reviewers conclude tape may serve as an adjunct but should not replace education-focused, exercise-based rehabilitation.

    Laser acupuncture beat sham for chronic low back pain

    In a double-blind, sham-controlled trial of 60 adults with chronic non-specific low back pain, both high- and low-intensity laser acupuncture added to exercise outperformed sham laser plus exercise on pain, trunk strength, mobility, fatigue and disability. The high-intensity version delivered greater gains in trunk extensor strength and pain relief.

    Frozen shoulder: hydrodilatation adds little over steroids

    A systematic review of 103 studies (9951 patients, 44 randomised trials) found that distending the shoulder capsule with fluid gave slightly more external rotation than a corticosteroid injection alone at 12 weeks, with no better pain or disability scores, and only marginal pain gains when added to physiotherapy. Technique varied enormously between clinics.

    What it shows: Systematic review with meta-analysis of 44 RCTs, but the significant findings were rated low or very low certainty with high heterogeneity (I2 up to 81.6%), and pooled techniques differed so widely that an optimal protocol could not be identified.Study · Br J Sports Med

    Ice packs failed to speed recovery, whenever applied

    Applying cold packs to worked muscles made no meaningful difference to soreness or strength recovery after damaging exercise: whether cooling started immediately or 24 hours later. Both cooled groups tracked the same recovery curve as controls who received no cold at all.

    Extra needling added nothing to tendon rehab

    Adding ultrasound-guided percutaneous neuromodulation to a programme of needle electrolysis plus eccentric exercise gave no extra short-term benefit for patellar tendinopathy: pain fell substantially in both groups, with no difference between them.

    Exercise eases athletes' back pain, but gaps remain

    Exercise-based treatments reduced pain and disability in athletes with low back pain, but no trial reported whether athletes actually returned to sport, and it remains unclear which treatment works best for whom.

    Cold plunges eased soreness, not strength recovery

    Pooling 22 randomised trials, a single cold-water immersion after exercise did nothing for maximal isometric strength recovery and transiently blunted jump performance immediately afterwards, while its apparent benefit for muscle-damage markers vanished once publication bias was accounted for. The one reasonably consistent effect was lower reported soreness.

    What it shows: Systematic review and meta-analysis of 22 RCTs in healthy people comparing one cold-water immersion bout with passive rest; certainty was moderate at best for strength and very low for soreness, with substantial heterogeneity and publication bias affecting the creatine kinase result.Meta-analysis · PeerJ

    Two recovery tools, two different jobs in over-40s

    In 60 recreational CrossFit athletes aged 40 and over, both ischaemic preconditioning and cold compression lowered creatine kinase at 72 hours versus passive rest, but their effects diverged: ischaemic preconditioning showed the clearest skin-level perfusion signal while cold compression improved perceived recovery and short-term reactive strength.

    What it shows: Single 2-week randomised repeated-measures trial, 60 athletes aged 40+ allocated 1:1:1; only tissue perfusion was a confirmatory endpoint and the authors state the results are not evidence of endothelial function or deep muscle perfusion.Study · Sci Rep
